What is a carbon footprint and why offset it?

Plant Earth globe

A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, event, organization, service, or product, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent. Greenhouse gases, including the carbon-containing gases carbon dioxide and methane, can be emitted through the burning of fossil fuels, land clearance, and the production and consumption of food, manufactured goods, materials, wood, roads, buildings, transportation, and other services.

We all need to take ownership of our carbon footprints, by taking steps to measure, offset, and reduce.

Why we launched Offsetter

How does Offsetter work?

Calculate your carbon footprint, offset your carbon footprint, reduce your carbon footprint

Calculate

Use our easy to use calculator to calculate how much carbon you generate, this is your "carbon footprint".

Projects we support

We only invest in projects that are Gold Standard® certified, considered the most rigorous climate standard by many NGOs, including WWF.

hiThe Nicaforest High Impact Reforestation Program, Nicaragua

The Nicaforest High Impact Reforestation Program, Nicaragua

Gold Standard logo

This program plants teak and other valuable species across 490 hectares of previously deforested land under management and aims to contribute to the creation of a sustainable value-chain by working closely with local landowners in a Shared Benefit Scheme. Approximately 360,000 trees have already been planted in four different farms. This program has already sequestered 45,624 tonnes of carbon, with potential for 32,460 more. hiCleaner Cook Stoves in Rwanda

Cleaner Cook Stoves in Rwanda

Gold Standard logo

In Rwanda, firewood accounts for at least 86% of energy consumption and is the primary cooking fuel for 98% of rural households. This project distributes fuel-efficient cook stoves, which reduces the amount of wood burning in households, meaning less harmful smoke, less indoor air pollution, and reduced carbon emissions. This programme (comprised of fourteen micro projects) will create 10,000 tonnes of carbon emission reductions through reducing the combustion of unsustainably-harvested biomass. hiBuenos Aires Renewable Energy Project, Brazil

Buenos Aires Renewable Energy Project, Brazil

Gold Standard logo

In a region where a shortage of rivers means less access to hydro-electric energy, native firewood and charcoal account for 30% of the total energy utilised in industries located here, which has intensified local deforestation. The Buenos Aires project has switched the fuel used by a ceramic factory from illegal firewood to agricultural and industrial residues, biomass which would have otherwise been discarded as waste. This project alleviates deforestation, avoids greenhouse gas emissions and promotes a more sustainable supply chain: it does this whilst also improving the livelihoods of local communities and employees. To date, this project has prevented 132,953 tons of carbon emissions over the past 10 years. Learn more about this project

hiImproved Cookstoves in Guinea

Improved Cookstoves in Guinea

Gold Standard logo

In Guinea, firewood and charcoal meet around 98% of the household energy needs, and demographic growth is leading to increasing pressure on woodlands. Guinean forests have decreased by around 10% over the last 20 years. Generally, cooking is done on open low efficiency hearths, consuming a high quantity of firewood and generating a lot of smoke. Through the distribution of cookstove. This project has prevented over 11,000 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere since 2015, and is run by French NGO. Learn more about this project

Climate action groups we support

Citizens' Climate Lobby logo

Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL) empowers a diverse coalition of everyday people throughout the United States to build political will for effective climate policies. From town halls to the White House, CCL uses a transformative, grassroots approach to organizing and sparks individual breakthroughs in personal and political power. Citizens' Climate Europe logo

CCL Europe is a non-profit NGO and a chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby, a grass-roots international organization aimed at conducting systemic change in favour of a greener, more sustainable society model. Throughout workshops and meetings with officials, CCL engages citizens to lobby in favour of energy transition based on the carbon fee and dividend policy. CCL promotes a fair, long-term solution to decarbonize our economies; indexed on an increasing carbon price, the “climate income” will be paid to every citizen to help them cope with the necessary change towards a greener society. CCL Europe focuses its efforts on the European Parliament, promoting EU adoption of a climate income. Learn more about this climate action group

Lobby Climatique Citoyen logo

Lobby Climatique Citoyen France is an independent NGO and also a chapter of Citizens' Climate Lobby (CCL). Having put forward propositions at the EU level since 2019, CCL France currently increases its activities towards French officials. Learn more about this climate action group
